1. The author is trying to understand the editing process. She and 6 other writers examined their editing techniques, looking specifically at what common writers can use to improve their own revision processes.
2. First, the authors were split into 2 groups- the more experienced authors, and the least experienced. Following this analysis, the authors were split into groups based in their revision techniques. Both of these groups were analyzed to determine what was edited within each group, and how the members acted when they were surrounded by different authors. All groups were filmed, and the results were recorded on a grid.
3. It is found that professional editors will focus on reading the piece as a whole, and will make minimal changes to content of the paper. Students tend to alter stylistic devices as well as material when editing their own paper. Professionals also work more tediously than the least experienced.
